Sign language instructors are critically scarce worldwide. An automated teaching and assessment system powered by computer vision and AI could revolutionize accessibility by providing 24/7 instruction, real-time feedback on hand movements, and personalized learning paths available anywhere with a camera-enabled device, while supporting existing instructors by handling foundational lessons so they can focus on advanced instruction and cultural nuances.
VISTA-SL is an Erasmus+ project that aims to cover this gap by developing a system employing the latest findings in computer vision, computer graphics and large language models. The consortium is led by the University of Patras. Partners are the Hellenic Mediterranean University, the Kentalis institute, the Hamburg University, the University Pompeu Fabra and the Technical University of Dublin.
In this open event we are going to present the system developed so far with hands-on demonstrations, as well as the latest advancements in the field of accessibility for the Deaf community. Speakers from all over Europe will join us for this event physically and remotely.
