Zero Waste Mariners: Urdaibai’s Coastal Cleanup
Setting Course for Zero Waste in Bermeo (Sailors for Sustainability)
As part of ErasmusDays, the CIFP NAUTIKA BERMEO LHII invites the community to a practical action day led by our Basic Vocational Training students.
The event focuses on a fundamental pillar of the Blue Economy: the protection and conservation of marine ecosystems, with the ambitious goal of achieving Zero Waste along the Bermeo coast, within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve.
This activity is more than just a cleanup; it’s a hands-on lesson in environmental management and nautical sustainability, demonstrating that the future of the maritime economy is inherently clean.
What We Will Do:
Zero-Impact Cleanup in Bermeo: Students will be deployed along the coast for a selective collection, prioritizing the extraction of microplastics and materials that pose a direct threat to the ecosystem.
Marine Litter Laboratory (“Zero Waste Lab”): We will classify and analyze the waste to identify its origins. This educational phase is crucial for understanding pollution patterns and proposing future prevention solutions.
Immersion in the Urdaibai Ecosystem: Experts will lead a training session on the biodiversity of Urdaibai and how waste pollution affects the food chain, directly linking ocean health with the viability of the Blue Economy.
“Zero Waste Fleet” Manifesto: The event will conclude with the students drafting a commitment, integrating the Zero Waste mindset into their future careers as sailors and nautical technicians.
Join the CIFP NAUTIKA BERMEO LHII in this practical demonstration of how the next generation of nautical professionals becomes an active defender of our ocean’s health.
