ESCUELA DE ARTE DE LA REGIÓN DE MURCIA

The Art School building, which hosts our Erasmus Incoming students, has recently been registered in the DOCOMOMO archive. The Docomomo Ibérico Foundation is an organization founded in the 1990s, part of Docomomo International, dedicated to the documentation and dissemination of modern architecture in the Iberian Peninsula—Spain and Portugal—and related island territories.

Values conveyed in the activity that connect with the European policy of the Erasmus+ program:

1. Connection with Heritage and Architecture (Docomomo)
These values focus on the 1968 building, the Docomomo plaque, and the Applied Arts studio:

Appreciation of the Existing and the Modern: Promote appreciation not only for the oldest historical heritage, but also for contemporary architecture and the Modern Movement (1925-1975). Teach that the architectural quality of recent periods deserves to be preserved and recognized.

Identity and Memory: The building as a testament to a time and place (Murcia), offering incoming students a cultural and historical anchor to their school. The Docomomo plaque acts as a seal that validates and recognizes this memory.

Sustainability and Anti-Demolition: Convey the value of conservation as an act of cultural and material sustainability, demonstrating the building’s ability to adapt and be useful over time, rather than resorting to demolition.

2. European Values and Exchange Values (Erasmus Days)
These are linked to incoming students and the celebration of Erasmus Days:

Cultural Diversity and Openness: Showcase the building and the plaque as part of a shared European heritage (Docomomo has an international network). The guided tour becomes an act of welcome, promoting inclusion and understanding that architecture and design have no borders.

Mobility and Mutual Learning: Erasmus Days celebrate exchange. Using the building as a meeting point emphasizes that learning takes place not only in the classroom, but also through direct experience, the environment, and interaction with a different culture.

Active European Citizenship: Linking heritage recognition (the plaque) with current university life encourages participation and a sense of responsibility in preserving the commons, a key value of Erasmus+.

3. Unique Synthesis
The most powerful value lies in the combination:

Dialogue between Past and Future: The 1968 building represents the modern past and is the space where future artists and designers are trained. The activity teaches students to view their surroundings with critical and respectful eyes, understanding that the design of the future is built on the design of the past.

In essence, the activity conveys that culture, recent history, and international mobility are pillars of applied arts training, enriching the students’ Erasmus experience.
