Elementary School Šime Budinić, Zadar, Croatia
As part of the Erasmus Days celebration, students will present a poster exhibition entitled “Erasmus Before Erasmus: How the Quest for Knowledge Built Europe.” The exhibition explores the rich history of European mobility, knowledge exchange, and cooperation across different historical periods. Erasmus is not a new idea. Long before the Erasmus+ programme existed, people travelled across Europe in search of knowledge, new experiences, and opportunities to exchange ideas and learn from different cultures. From ancient scholars and medieval university students to Renaissance humanists and Croatian intellectuals, generations of Europeans crossed borders to broaden their horizons and share their knowledge.
Through creative and digital posters, students will discover how these historical journeys helped shape Europe’s shared intellectual and cultural heritage. The project also promotes essential skills for the future, including critical thinking, digital literacy, and cultural awareness.
The exhibition highlights a powerful message: the spirit of Erasmus+ has deep historical roots. European cooperation, learning, and cultural exchange are not new ideas, but a living tradition that continues to connect people across borders today.
